–v.t.
1. to withhold (a person's money or property) by legal authority in payment of a debt. If a creditor garnishees a debtor's salary, a certain portion of the salary is withheld and paid to the creditor.
2. to notify (a person) not to hand over money or property belonging to the defendant in a lawsuit until the plaintiff's claims have been settled: »
